Kinesiology Tape
How it Works
Brief History:
Kinesiology tape was developed in the 1970's by Dr. Kenzo Kase, who was looking for something elastic that could help support his patients in between their chiropractic adjustments. Since then, it has been a go to therapy for many top athletes, physical therapy patients and for preventative care. In the 2000's, the same principles and ideas for how the tape works and responds to humans was brought over into the equine world.
How does it work?
When the tape adheres to your horses coat it gently recoils, thereby lifting the skin. This lifting action decompresses the underlying tissues: lymphatic system, joints, fascia, muscles and nerves.
This helps to:
Decompress Tissues
Increase Circulation
Joint Support
Pain Relief
Improves Muscle and Joint Recovery
Relaxes Muscles and Trigger Points
Neuromuscular Facilitation
Fascial Unwinding
Edema Management
Communicating to the Brain
By having the tape on your horse it is communicating to the brain through mechanoreceptors. Mechanreceptors are a sensory receptors that responds to pressure, vibration, light touch, and muscle contractions. It also communicates with their bodies pain receptors called nociceptors, which helps to report pain in the body.
This can help with:
Proprioception
Body Awareness
Balance
Neuromuscular Re-education
Pain Management
Injury Prevention
